Our Milestone: Juniper has escaped us and run into the Carnival….we must find and retrieve her!
Notes :
The Witchlight Carnival comes to the material plane once every eight summers, and this is the year it has come to Anauroch!
The group was introduced to the Owlbear Cub, Juniper, and determined how it is they know of her/what their relationship to her is. They also determined and recounted how it was that they all came to this place and/or know each other.
In November, all players were given a ticket for admittance to the Witchlight Carnival. Each member approaches the ticket booth and presents their ticket to Nikolas – a wrinkled goblin who carries a spyglass and an ear horn. The characters that did not lose or forget their tickets were awarded a magic item upon entrance.
Once all of this is done, they are given a pair of gossamer fairy wings. Due to an agreement between the owners and the Hourglass Coven (3 sister witches), unpaid visitors are not protected from the hags’ thieves who wander the carnival grounds gathering curios for their mistresses. The wings demonstrate to the owners (Mr. Witch and Mr. Light) that these customers did not sneak in.
Upon entering the Carnival, the group’s first sight is one of brilliant colors, bright lights, and Dirlagraun! She is a HUGE Displacer Beast who dwarfs all by comparison. She is a kindly warden who monitors the behavior of all guests, but at present is currently engaged in joyful play with her kitten, Star. Star is as big as the members of the group are, but is amiable and lets all guests scratch her behind the ears.
Occasional glimpses of Juniper lead the players from gaming booth to gaming booth, but no one is able to determine exactly where she has gone. Slippery little cub!
While visiting each of the game stalls, various feats are tested and magic items are won. Other patrons catch the group’s attention, hawking of the booth owners rings in their ears, and carnival entertainers pass through the crowds performing various acts of skill and tomfoolery.
They learn of Burly and Hurly, the Carnival Enforcers. Should Dirlagraun catch sight of unwelcome behavior, she will refer you to these two grumpy Bugbear brothers who will set you straight or eject you from the grounds.
Finally, a sighting of Juniper being chased by Candlefoot the Carnival Storyteller leads the group to a grassy knoll. Passing by the sign “Candlefoot’s Story Hour”, the group arrives to find he has already started this evening’s tale of magic and woe.
He speaks of the carousel operator, Diana Cloppington. Beautiful and valiant in battle, he believes she is a miracle above all other women. He tells of the time she approached Granny Nightshade (one of the 3 witch sisters) seeking help in locating her warhorse which went missing in battle. But for her humble request, Diana was rewarded for her search by being cruelly transformed into half woman, half horse and now resembles a Centaur. She presently operates the carousel awaiting the day when her horse will be found, and the spell broken. Tears in the storyteller’s eyes show that Diana is more than a friend to him and that he grieves her loss as if it was his own. The audience applauds his story as they all wipe tears from their eyes.
Ahh! At last, Juniper is seen in Candlefoot’s tent, and attempts to lure her out are tried. Calling does not good, and wooing with song is fruitless. She is finally lured out with one of the snacks being carried by a group member.
Success!!! Next meeting all characters will promote to level 1!
